La Puente Rancho, in the San Gabriel Valley of Alta California, Mexico is now part of Los Angeles County, California — a big part.  The rancho, covering about 76 square miles of prime land, was developed by John Albert Rowland and William Workman after the leading the Rowland-Workman Expedition from the Sante Fe – Taos area to southern California in 1841.

Lenore Rowland, the author and a descendant of John Albert Rowland, describes the expedition, acquisition and development of the rancho, and the rancho lifestyle. The historical account covers the period from about 1840 through 1920.
